SAR training

SAR training early Saturday morning at Aspen Grove. 9-1 we split into groups and covered 4 different areas, snowmobiling, medical, building anchors, and patient packing, then avalanche where we used out beacons, shovels and probes to find victims. Way fun! Got home showered ran to work about 2:20, about 3 my pager goes off I run out of work up to Tibble Fork up AF canyon where a sledder broke their leg. He got to the ambulance before we had to step in. So that was that. Got a high five from Greg and drove back to work. It was a crazy crazy day. So today on my day off I am relaxing!!! Well deserved.

I really need to start bringing my camera. I always forget. So here is a picture that my back is in. haha I'm on the far right. I will get better pictures one of these days. It's just not what I think of when I am doing rescues.

This is where I spent my first night on Search and Rescue. I got my pager the 6th and this happened the 7th. It was a long night. All the first years have yellow jackets. The guy filmed us all in the big group talking. What a fun night. Glad it was a successful rescue.

SAR practice anyone?

This was how I spent Thursday night...
We had a great night out last night. We started in Grove Creek Canyon at 6pm. Starting temps were 18 degrees w/ slight breeze. Perfect conditions for an evening run. A 2.25 mile loop of tracks of a "lost" trail runner were put down to follow. Like usual, Troy busted a move on all. All but 1 made it back in the required 40 minute cut-off time. A quick knot review was done while waiting for Shaun to arrive. Shaun then spent 45 minutes teaching avalanche skills. An introduction to beacon use was done. We then headed to the Manilla Pond for some ice rescue training by PGFD. We used their inflatable boat and exposure suits to rescue a couple of victims not quite prepared for their 34 degree swim in the pond. Next, we headed to PGFD for a 30 minute lesson about hypothermia.
I am glad we got a few pictures of that night. That survival suit I am wearing was incredible. I am not to sure about the one size fits all but it worked for me and was so fun! It was about 13 degrees at this point but with the wind chill it felt like 0.
I get my pager, rope, webbing, and lots of other goodies Thursday night at the team meeting. Let the adventures start. I was bummed to not have my pager over the Holiday's. They had so many call outs I wish I could have gone on. They even got called out on the couple that went out Christmas day and didn't return. I am sure you heard about it on the news. It was a tragic story. Wish I could have participated though.

7 Sheriffs sitting at a table staring at you, judging you, asking what you would bring to the team, telling you how demanding it is and how much time it takes, and giving you scenarios to see how you react... Here I am thinking I blew it upset that they don't even know how bad I want this and how much I really could offer to the team and how dedicated I would really be. I'm pretty sure when they asked what I could bring to SAR I just froze and all I could think to say was "I have a lot to offer ". Duh. But my mind went blank and I kept trying to think of words but nothing was coming. I just kept thinking about all the sheriffs watching me judging me the whole time wondering if I could handle SAR. Needless to say I left that interview thinking I had no chance because I felt like in 15 min they couldn't really understand who I am and what I really have to offer. On Wednesday I learned differently. I MADE IT! They are giving me a chance! I screamed when I hung up the phone after talking to the head sheriff. I don't think anyone else understands my excitement but I told everyone anyways cause I was so happy! When I got to work I just started calling managers and telling them. This next year is going to be a lot different and I can't wait. I will constantly be wearing a pager and carrying a radio in my car with all my equipment ready to go when they need me. I have training 3 times a month on top of the call outs. My first year I have to attend 40% of all the calls. I can't wait. I made it. I get to make a difference and do what I love. What could be better. :)

I had a few days off this week and Lara and Eric were nice enough to open their house to me. They just moved here last week. I love Colorado. It is so pretty! We had such a fun time! We went swimming, out to eat, to the mall, Boulder, Denver, and more. It was such a nice relaxing weekend. Well worth the drive. Lara and I also hung up and put all the final touches on her apartment. Something I love to do. Organize. :) We are about to go to Witch Which ( A really yummy sandwich place my sister got me hooked on. I got excited when I saw they had one), then to World Market then I will start my drive home. Good way to end the summer. Love you guys! Thanks for being so sweet and letting me crash with you for the weekend!

Caught someone stealing at work... good thing her little girl had some morals! In the bathroom at work I overheard the little girl ask her mom if she had bought the North Face coat she was wearing and never heard the answer, but it was a clue when they took off out of the bathroom without washing their hands that something was up. She felt pretty dumb when I was standing at the front doors looking at her. By then a manager had made it obvious we knew and had taken the coat off. Why would you steal with your little kids and husband!

The beds over the past month

We slept in a parking lot. We were going to do a canyon here the next morning and asking the neighbors if it was alright to sleep in the parking lot right by there house. They didn't care and were happy we asked. Those are my fun thermals I have on. Very colorful.
Free camp site. No one else was here. A guy kept driving by us looking for his lost dog. It had been lost for 10 days. This is also where Van threw a rock at a possum. They were on the car right by us.
Just the side of the road. Right before you get to the Bay of Islands.
Crouch's family room. Members we found in North Shore. This ended up being our home base. We spent 3 weekends with them. Such a nice family.
Tori's bedroom. This was on flat island. They let me use there daughters bedroom. So nice to have a bed!

Car. We slept in the back of the family's car. They let us use there car while we traveled around Great Barrier Island. It was so cold this night. Van is in the green bag curled up.
Margette got us a backpackers place to stay in one night while on the island. This was so nice of her and unnecessary. We were used to sleeping on the side of the road. But I loved the night we had beds! I couldn't complain.

Beds over the last month. A lot of people have asked where I was sleeping while I was traveling around New Zealand. I tried to get pictures of most the places. So here are some. I don't have all my pictures with me right now but you get the idea. It was an adventure. Showers were a little harder to find but not bad. Water we would get out of the local restrooms in towns or wherever we could find a place to fill up a couple bottles to last us a night or two and then we would just repeat the process.

Fishing on Flat Island

We fished a lot the week we were on Flat Island. We would fish as the sun was going down and bring it home and Margarette would cook it up. One night she spent hours in the kitchen just cooking fish different ways not knowing which we would like more. I had to take a picture of it. It all looked so good! She was such a good cook. Must be amazing to have all those fish right at your finger tips every night. Talk about FRESH! Yummy! All but the raw oyster I ate. They got a kick out of watching me play with and then eat the oyster. Yuck. Not my favorite.

Last day in New Zealand

This is Margarette. She was amazing. It was so fun to stay with her and her family. She treated us like her own kids. It was wonderful.

We stayed on the little flat island in the middle of this picture. The whole island is only 148 acres. 7 holiday homes of family members who don't live there. They are the only ones the live there all year around. What a different life that would be. It was so fun to spend a week with them.

What a way to end our time in New Zealand. Margarette the lady we stayed with on the little Island off Great Barrier Island flew us back to Auckland! She didn't feel like driving us all the way to the ferry Sunday afternoon so she bought us plane tickets! We flew home with her son who came out to do some fishing with us. We flew home in a little 10 passenger plane. I got to sit next to the pilot! This was such a fun day! It was so beautiful! I thought about my dad a lot while I was flying. He would have been freaking out. He hates heights. But I loved every minute of it.

Shopping in Texas

I think my Texas trip has been very successful. I have shopped and shopped and shopped. Thanks to my sister we have done some damage. I love all my new clothes. I had a lot of fun. Now I just need my hair done. It has been feeling a bit gross and very long lately. I think it was a good idea to stop here on my way home. It's always fun visiting the sister. Plus I haven't seen them for awhile. All the kids are so cute and grown up. It's been fun.

Dolphins in New Zealand

The last week in New Zealand my friend and I traveled to Great Barrier Island. Where a family picked took us to an even smaller island. To get to GBI you can take a 5 hour ferry ride or fly for 30 min. We choose the ferry because it was a lot cheaper and we weren't in a hurry. Dolphins always show up to ride with the ferry. It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. They were beautiful just coasting along with the front of the boat. It was so peaceful to watch. I loved it. Van being 6'4 got a sweet picture of me right when the dolphin was jumping. My hair is a bit crazy from the wind but I love that picture. What fun memories. I had to add the video so you could get a better idea of what I am talking about.

On Monday I am going to get in a car with 2 friends and drive all over New Zealand for 3 weeks. We have some fun stuff planned. I am really excited. I think we will be camping most the time. Which should be exciting. We will just be finding different spots around cities to sleep. Haven't figured out how I am going to shower. Those are just details I will have to figure out on the way. I have lots of stories I will have to tell when I get the time. I have loved my time in New Zealand. I have grown a lot in many different ways. I am ready for this time to end though. I am ready to leave Invercargill. I am looking forward to the time to travel and relax with some good friends. Then Disneyland, Texas and back to work. Thanks for all the support from everyone while I have been here.

They open the water towers for tours. It is the tallest building in Invercargill so you can see everything at the top. On the news the other night they were auctioning off a night in the tower. It was very funny. They put a bed in and made it look all nice.

We had a girls day in Dunedin. It's about 2 and a half hours away from Invercargill. It's a bigger town we thought would be fun to play around in for the day. We had lots of fun. It was O week at the college there so we walked around and got a lot of free food, energy drinks, top romin, and mac and cheese.... haha college kid food I guess. It was a fun relaxing day. My Jade nacklace... I love it and probably paid way to much but it means a lot to me. I love making colors stand out when I take pictures now. I have been having a lot of fun with it.

Worlds steepest street.... we had a lot of fun playing on this. The car they won almost didn't make it to the top.

I just made the blue stand out..... I love it.

Oh yes I toured the Cadbury Chocolate factory! Haha It wasn't that amazing at all. I walked away with a little bag of candy but don't think I would do it again. Fun day in Dunedin though.

This is Hamish. Our host dad. We helped him on the farm yesterday. I have service hours for a class so I think I will be going there a lot. It was fun. Oh and our dog Elle is in the picture! I love her!
Sheep. They have about 470 on the farm right now. But not for long.
This sheep was blind and couldn't figure out where to go. It ran into the fence so many times. It made me way sad. We had to keep helping it. And had to throw it in the trailer and take it to the correct field at one point just because it was causing us such trouble.
Elle chased the blind one in this stream and we had to help it get out. It was sad. It had no clue what was going on.
Hamish, Elle, and I herding the sheep. I got to drive the car at one point, stick shift on the wrong side! It was so fun!

This picture was suppose to be last.... so read on for it to make sense. I don't know how to move it. :) This is the spot light we used. I had to show everyone how old school it was! haha It was way funny! We had to hook it to the battery pack with cables. The best part was when Isaac fell on the steep hill holding that thing cause he had no hands to catch himself. All he said was "I just fell" which was apparent cause he was laying there on the ground. It was a good laugh.
This is were we went hunting last night. A family friend of my host family owns 1200 acres. It is amazing! We can surf, hunt, fish, wakeboard all in one spot. He built a lake on his property and has retreat youth camps all the time there. We are going out there for a weekend soon. I can't wait.
We jumped on the atv to get to our hunting spot. Zion memories with these people and atv's.
So behind me there is a HUGE sea-lion! It was amazing! This was on our way to the guys house to go hunting. It's so beautiful!

Stacy and I walking down this beach for hours and had so much fun taking pictures and relaxing. This one is my favorite. I am not sure why I was jumping like that.
This seal let me get way close. Turns out it didn't have a right eye. I love the beaches here. They are beautiful!
Stacy's birthday party on the beach. This is who I spend all my time with. We have a lot of fun together. Usually gets pretty interesting at night with the 2 of us. We have fun.
Ahhhh the bike picture. All I have to say is it is going to be very odd when I get home and we are driving on the other side of the road again. I am getting used to the opposite way now. I just look all around for cars not knowing what way they should be coming. We have to wear helmets and have to ride in the bike lanes on the streets otherwise we will get a ticket. It hasn't been to bad so far. Yesterday we road over 20 miles. It was a long day on the bikes. But fun.

I will write more later and catch people up on the 2 week trip and everything. These are just a few pictures I found on Stacy's computer and thought I would share. I will try and make more time to post more and tell you all about it. I love it here. I am off to bed. It's 11:15 Thursday night which means it is Thursday morning at 3 for all of you. New Zealand here I come!

I have had some request on wanting to see where I am living for the next 3 months. The address is below. I type it in Google maps and you can see my house. I am very excited to be going and will try and update facebook and my blog more! :) Tomorrow I fly to LA at 1, then have a 5 hour layover, then at 7:20 get on a 747 (huge plane) and fly 12 hours and 55 min. and land in Auckland, New Zealand. We will then load up in 4 vans and travel down to Invercargill stopping in a different city every night. We arrive in Invercargill January 27Th and live with a New Zealand family until April 9Th. I will be attending SIT (Southern Institute of Technology) There I am taking 12 credits. Some of the classes I will be taking are sea kayaking, surfing, tramps (backpacking) and rock climbing. (of course I am only going to name the fun ones!) On April 9Th school ends and I am going to continue to rent our instructors van and travel all around New Zealand until May 3rd with my friends Isaac and Van. We will be doing a lot of tramps, and canyoneering with some locals. Isaac has made friends with a lot of people that enjoy canyoneering as much as he does and I get to benefit from it. I can't wait to start my trip tomorrow! Have a good 4 months! I know I will.

Summer of Cayoneering

I had just bought my camera and was excited to use it down a canyon for the first time. We took this amazing family down Birch Canyon. They were probably my favorite family of the summer. We had a blast and the Mom of the family took a few pictures of Isaac and I. It was very sweet.

I named this rock "my square rock" ha ha I told all the groups about it. I got them really excited about it at the beginning of the trip and they looked forward to seeing it. I made Isaac pose with me when we got to it. I don't think he loved it as much as I did. :) Not sure why this rock stuck with me but it did. It turned out to be a funny picture. I love Isaac's face. He put on a huge grin for me! ha ha

I loved meeting all the people on our canyon days. They trusted us and knew it was once in a life time experience for them. All of the family's I got to go with loved it and I loved seeing them so happy in this place I grew to love. Zion is an amazing beautiful place. I will always feel a connection to Zion. I would be driving back to the Ponderosa after Isaac and I would spend our days off in Zion and I would comment almost every time on how beautiful it was. Especially when it would rain on those red cliffs. What an amazing place!

Volunteer Fire Fighter

Every Wednesday we would have our fire training class. This particular day we got dressed up in our gear and acted out a scenario on one of the houses at the Ponderosa. It was so fun! I love these pictures! The first time I grabbed the fire hose and wanted to try it out before I knew it I had three guys behind me holding the hose. I started laughing and told them I could handle it. They didn't listen and just kept holding it. Guess they saw it going badly. While Isaac had the hose I told him to put me out and ran out into the tree's threw my arms up in the air trying to look as much like a tree as possible and got very very wet very quickly. We both had a good laugh. It was an amazing summer and I learned and grew so much. It was the best internship for me!

I was on my way out the door when I saw my dad's car smoking! I ran inside running around screaming "DAD!!!! YOUR CAR IS ON FIRE!!!!" I was frantic looking for a fire extinguisher. When my mom said we don't have one I said "hose!" and was out the door. I turned the hose on the flames while my dad called the fire department. They took so long I practically got it out myself. My dad wanted to open the hood while we were waiting for them and I disagreed and Asked if had ever seen movies very sarcastically of course! I told him we would blow up! Ha ha I scared him enough that we didn't open it. Kelsey wanted to see everything so I brought her out but she wouldn't leave my side. I wanted to get her picture by the fire truck, but being afraid of men this is the picture I got. What a funny day. Goodbye Trooper.

I fell in love with this Lucky purse when I visited Vegas this summer. It is perfect for New Zealand. I ran into again the other day when my mom and I went shopping and I had to have it. Well I have been here for about 3 weeks now and still loving it. All the rec guides went out and played a paintball game the other night. I had never played before and I loved it. I was just running around shotting and sweating, haha it was awesome. Getting hit in the butt wasn't much fun though. I don't have my camera or computer so these pictures are from my friend. Everyone is great and I am having the time of my life. Isaac and I are coming home at the end of the month for a few days. That should be fun to see everyone. Enjoy your summer everyone!

So here is the new phone. No more Cricket. I switched to T mobile and got a free blackberry flip phone. There are a lot of things on this phone and I have no idea how to use them. I mainly switched users so I would have service this summer. I am liking it much better then the old cricket phone. I am glad I finally went in and changed services.

Paria Canyon

Here are the Paria pictures finally. We have over 200 pictures and I wasn't sure what to show everyone. It was so pretty and so much fun. I will put more pictures on facebook. Looking at these pictures made me want to go back. It was the best week long backpacking trip. Oh and I have quiet a story on a visitor we had at night while we camped.

For the weekend we went canyoneering at Robers Roost. It snowed Saturday morning making it a cold trip but a lot of fun! We just car camped which was a nice change. We did three rappels on our hike. (one 20 ft. and two 70 ft. rappels) I have to explain the picture with my teacher bent over at a right angle... apparently when lifting something up to your chest bent at a right angle men can't get up and women can. We had some good laughs as my teacher was stuck in this position. We all tried it and it is very true. God just made men and women different and this is a funny thing to try to prove that point.

This weekend I went to my guide training for Ponderosa Ranch. I had so much fun. We did so much stuff!! We started with going down the zip line, then repelled, went shooting 20 gage shot guns, went on a tour of the land which is huge, then went on the atv's, and played ping pong, and pool during our breaks, ate the best buffet for every meal... the list goes on. Plus that was all in one day. I am going to have the best summer ever!! I move in a month and can't wait!

Saturday was a pretty busy day and we ended up having to help the guest. They all wanted to do the zip line so we did that for the first part of the day. I ended up having little 2 year olds going off of it. We would strap them in a body harness and send them off a 50 ft. building! I checked their harness over and over before I let them step off! I'm not sure I will ever get used to the little kids going on the zip line. They all loved it though. I also got to trail behind 2 atv groups that went on an hour ride all over. We over looked Jolly Gulch both times that is about 140 ft. canyon. B-E-A-utiful!!!

I am spending my spring break backpacking in the Paria Canyon in Arizona for my Outdoor Leadership class. My teacher pulled permits Dec. 1st! It's a once in a life time opportunity! I am so excited! Most amazing Jazz game!

Jazz Games will never be the same! Mary and Jorge invited me to a suite at the Jazz game. We arrived early and ate an amazing meal which included prime rib, cat fish, fresh fruit, salads, all I could drink Dr. pepper, etc. Then at half time we had a huge dessert bar with every cake and cookie imaginable! Oh man I don't think I can go to a normal game again. This was the best! Thanks for thinking of me guys! Also it was the game honoring Larry H. Millers passing. It was really cool to share that moment of silence with everyone as they lit up his empty seat next to his wife... it made me cry.

Capitol Reef Field Station!

Capitol Reef National Park Field Station! My program planning class just helped put on an event promoting this wonderful place! We held it at the UVU and gave away over 190 prizes my class had gathered, and held contests and ate good food. This field station has been in progress for 15 years! We finally have it and I can't wait to see it. It is all self sustaining. The parking lot if full of solar panels. There are classrooms and places to sleep and bathrooms. It's awesome and we are proud to promote it.

CRAZY Month!

This next month is going to be crazy! I have 3 trips planned and lots of school work ahead. I am so excited though... I will fill everyone in soon on whats going on and have good pictures of the trips. They should be so fun. I can't wait!

Jordan and I decided to try sledding out the other night. I don't remember the last time I laughed that hard. I started the night off with flying off a jump I didn't see and J continued to scream "are you okay?" from the top of the huge hill. It was good to get out and have some fun atfer working so much.
